23 June 2010 (Wed) - Recruitment Jokes

Such heavy downpour.. Will Orchard Rd turn into Orchard River again?

I have been busy with recruitment these couple of weeks.. encountered a few jokers and thought of sharing these with you… like what my dad used to say.. “One type of rice but breed a hundred different types of personalities from it” (direct translation from Mandarin, hahaha!)

1) So we usually send out job applications from our personal email accounts… and I know many people like to have cute email address.. ah, maybe a little too cute??… I have gotten application emails from Blue Soul Slayer, Butterfly Belle, Killer Whale Orca… best of all is an application that came from an email address that freaked me out as I thought that my P.C has kanna virus.. Virus Moore@_____.. Crazy right?

2) We all want to put our best photo in our resumes, but what if that nicest photo of ours was taken ages ago??.. My advice? Ditch that photo lah! Instead, use another photo taken recently (or in past year) to avoid making a fool out of yourself!.. A few examples: I knew this lady who was in her fifties and she expressed interest to me when the vacancy came along, so I asked her to send her resume… the photo that she used, was probably taken 20 years ago… a black & white picture that has turned yellow with age.

And some candidates showed up at the interviews looking least bit like in the photos that they used… some have obviously grown much bigger (& heavier) since the time that the picture was taken, jialat leh!

3) Self praise is international disgrace! We know that we have only got just 1 opportunity to ‘sell’ ourselves… our resume will have to stand out among the rest. Besides stating our past experiences, educational background and achievements, some people like to highlight their strengths in their resumes. It is ok to do that, but pls indicate supporting evidences to back up your strengths lah. Eg. “I am good at multitasking as I have to deal with several vendors concurrently while with ABC company.”… instead I get “Firstly, I am hardworking. Secondly, I am sociable and friendly.” Yeah right… maybe he/ she should add in “Thirdly, I am real good in my written English.”

20 Jun 2010 (Sun) - Food!

I love homecooked food, especially appreciate a hot meal made specially for me now that I am pregnant..

Mum made this bowl of delicious vermicelli for me last Sunday.. She stir-fried ginger slices with sesame oil, added in the tender pork, a bowl of water and bring to boil... followed by adding vermicelli, fish slices and seasonings before serving... tasted so good!

Potato & Egg Salad (with Shitake Mushrooms and Organic French Beans) made by Melvin yesterday.. I had a bowl of it for breakfast today.. yum!

I cooked some dishes for dinner yesterday.. Stir-fry garlic prawns, Minced pork egg omelette, Fish with oyster sauce/ onion & Watercress Soup.. I think I put in too many red dates in the soup so it was a little too sweet...

Made extra rice yesterday, so decided to fry some rice for lunch today.. The good thing about fried rice is that you can add in almost any ingredient and it will still taste good!... Today, I added prawns, potatoes, minced pork (with the eggs), french beans.. you can season the prawns with alittle salt and add in soya sauce in the egg mixture...

Pre-fried the potato cubes beforehand... till slightly brown...

(Blogger is weird today.. can't load the pictures in the right position..)
Stir-fried these ingredients in this order: Garlic, French Beans, Egg Mixture, Prawns, Potatoes, Rice, Salt & Pepper... fry it till the rice is well mixed with the ingredients.. simple and delicious.. if I say so myself... :-)
Finally....
King of all fruits... DURIANS!!! Been having these 4 times last week... so good!!

17 Jun 2010 (Thu) - Disgusting Steamboat

I had the most disgusting lunch today. It was so bad that I still feel like barfing although I have already threw up the food earlier.

It all started with a colleague of mine who was checking out some lunch promotions at Vivocity and he suggested trying the steamboat set at ‘B.S.C’. The lunch promotion set is priced at S$8.40 nett per pax. So 5 of us went along to check out the place… It was situated next to Daiso, or should I say behind Daiso.. Once I stepped into the restaurant, I knew it is going to be like one of the many “budget” steamboat outlets located around Beach Road. Totally regretted my decision to join!

We were introduced to the lunch set which includes lots of vegetables, an egg, half a piece of Maggie mee, a few pieces of fishballs/ crabsticks/ beancurd, 3 medium-sized prawns, 3pcs of clams, a lump of fatty pork slices and 3 huge chunks of chicken drumstick..

You must be thinking it’s a huge portion for S$8.40… worth it right??.. but wait till you hear the rest..

The lump of pork slices has so much fats in them.. and the frozen chicken drumstick wasn’t de-bone and served to us in huge chunky pieces which are more suitable for cooking chicken curry.. very gross ok! Very very gross! Some of the fishcakes were starting turning bad, tasted really weird.. Not only that, we were given “complimentary” peach ice-cream at the end of the very painful meal.. The colour of the ice-cream is grayish.. it’s half liquid, half ice.. I thought it was yam paste or something, it looks like yam paste mixed with bo-bo cha-cha.. So unprofessional! They served us half-made ice-cream ok?!... the kind that you pour the liquid mixture on the ice-cream frying pan and supposed to fry it until it becomes frozen.. they served half frozen mixture/ ice-cream!

Overall feedback – don’t bother to try unless you are into cheap and low-quality food. Hygiene – the electric hotplate cooker still has some chilli dripped on it from the previous patrons.

I am staying away from steamboat for a long, long time.

14 Jun 2010 (Mon) - Hello...

How’s your weekend?

Mine was pretty good.. I didn’t do much but did spend some quality time with my family. How I wish we have longer weekends.. 4-day work week and 3-day weekend.. dream on… dream on right?

My cousins from Auckland will be back in Dec.. good to have them back during the festive session.. oh, must remind them to bring X’mas, New Year presents for my bb..

I can feel my bb moving around more these days.. from the slight movements which can only be felt by me, to the more obvious stretching around that cause my tummy to move suddenly. He is especially active at nights, can feel him tossing and turning around many times.. my mum told me that I will be very attached to him once he is born and I won’t bear to leave him at my mum’s place when I return to work…

What to do??

8 Jun 2010 (Tue) - Visit to Hard Rock SG

Just came back from Resort World Sentosa.. was there with my MD and colleague to check out the meeting facilities at the Hard Rock Hotel.. It will be nice to hold a couple of events there instead of the usual hotels that we have been using. I especially like the pool which is modeled after a beach.. it is huge and part of the pool has sands in it!

Since I am not allowed to do any traveling, how about a night stay at the Hard Rock Hotel?? ~ Hint, hint.. Melvin ~

After the our site visit, we walked around for awhile as I wanted to check out the Victoria Secret outlet.. ok, it is the first (long awaited) Victoria Secret shop in Singapore. But it is disappointing leh… they do carry the bath and body care products but the shop is so small and there is a limited selection of lingerie… not that I am into their lingerie lah.. but it is a different experience walking into a VS outlet in U.S.. I felt like a little girl in a candy shop when I visited the VS outlet in Vegas… everything is so pretty in pink and I am tempted to buy a little of everything… which I did lah.. mainly their body care products…

I didn’t buy anything today which is a good thing since I have overspent on shopping in previous weeks.. Just walked around and had lunch at Ramen Play, a treat from the boss. The ramen is so-so lah, but I was hungry so I finished everything… My bb is growing and so am I.. gained over 5kg since week 6 and will be putting on more as I feel hungry easily and faster these days. I am well on my path to Auntiehood…

4 June 2010 (Fri) - Baby Scan

Glad that it’s already Friday!

I went for my detailed scanning on Tuesday morning.. it’s when the doctor will spend longer time (compared with the usual monthly one) scanning the baby’s organs/ limbs/ gender/ face – his overall growth.. We are relieved when the doctor told us “so far so good” after the scan… like I have said previously, nothing is more important than having a healthy baby now..

It was amazing when I saw my baby moving his hands and legs for the first time a couple of months back and it is equally amazing to see him moving his mouth/ lips now! So cute can!! Must be trying to say hi to us, hahaha!

If you ask me… yes, the baby is worth the morning sickness.. Every time that I see him (through the scans), I am reminded to be thankful for this gift from the “above”… I know it sounds really mushy, but pls bear with me.

Here the scan pictures from the Tue scan.. first one is view from the bottom and the other is a face shot...
