I don't know what it is with me, but I have the urge to just blog about anything recently. Perhaps, I have too much time on hand. Anyway, I've finished this piece last night. But decided not to post it yesterday as it seems really ridiculous to blog twice a day.
Confessions of another Shopaholic
I've caught the “Confessions of a Shopaholic” with my family last Sunday. Beneath all that glamorous clothes and ditzy manner, Becky (main character) is one sad soul. “Why?” you may ask… Because she allowed her interest in “Shopping” to grow into an obsession. An obsession that could end her career, ruin her relationships with family and friends.
She took on more than what she could afford.
She let the snow ball gets bigger and bigger until it was way out of control.
She lost her credibility as she was churning up lies to cover the other lies.
And she was lucky to have close family and supportive friends backing her up in the end.
From her earlier denial of her problems, she took to lying to conceal her mess. She then ran away from her problems and hid from creditors who still eventually got to her. It is all too realistic, isn’t it?
I guess the movie serves as a wake up call for most of us (me too). I am sure each of us has been through what I listed above at one point or another in life. A dark secret maybe or a persisting bad habit that we wanted so much to get rid off but never manage to?!
I have - I love shopping (I think it has got to do with a bad childhood :-))… I agreed with her that the smell of new leather is ever so attractive. I could never resist a good sale and I am always in search of another pair of heels, another pot of cream, another dress, another bag! I am known by close friends to own the same pair of shoes/ jeans in different colors. Well… what can I say… I am another pathetic soul with an insatiable need for new material gains. (I bought 3 pair of shoes at one go and 3 dresses on another occasion last month.)
I have tried self control – always reminding myself that I do not need a superficial item to complete me. I have tried reading/ cooking/ movies/ games to distract myself, and it usually works for awhile. The only bright side is that I have yet to land myself in any debt due to over-shopping. The worst scenario was to blown my entire paycheck (with no savings) on shop shop.
Well, the main point of this post is not just wholly about me. I have known of people who allowed an obsession to take over his/ her life. If you are reading this, wise up and take charge! Let us not fall into the 'Denial -> Lies -> Hide -> Lose Everything' routine. You got to start treasuring what you have got before it is too late. And 'too late' is just round the corner.
Ultimately, no one can help you as much as yourself. This applies to me too. Let’s help each other along the way.
*I didn't buy anything yesterday! I stayed sober! Let's see how Day 2 goes.
