When I was pregnant, I remembered thinking how bored I was going to be during my 18 weeks of maternity leaves... After all, I was used to waking up early and spending the entire day at work, followed by minor cleaning of the house and doing laundry the the evenings... So the idea of staying at home all the time and having nothing to do was both new and scary to me then... A couple of months before I was due to deliver, I bought books and a sewing machine, planning to occupy myself with these during the 4 long months..
Fast forward to 5 months later, the books remain unread and the sewing machine has been put aside in the storeroom - simply because there is never a moment of free time for these things loh!
Contradicting my and others' thinking, being a stay-home-mum is really a 24/7 job! Here's how a day being in my shoe is like;
6am - 9am: Lucas is like a rooster and he wakes up before 7am everyday! Guess he is a morning person like me :-P... I start the day with feeding Poppy, washing/ sterilising Luca's milk bottles, feeding him milk, making the bed, bathing him, followed by me taking a bathe before I let him take his morning nap.
9am - 1pm: While he is asleep, I will have my breakfast quickly and do some cleaning. I was used to the house being very neat and clean when the maid was around, so I was trying to upkeep the tidiness initially. Kept cleaning and washing in between his naps/ feeds and I ended up being terribly exhausted everyday. Very "shiong" ok! So now I will only do bits of cleaning everyday.. e.g. wash one toilet a day, wash the other toilet the next day.. or I will clean the furniture this week and keep other tasks (such as changing of bedsheets) to another week. Lucky Melvin is helping me with the vacuuming and mopping of the floor on weekends. By 10 - 11am, Lucas will wake up for his cereal so I will have to stop what I'm doing to feed him and play with him for awhile before I will have to prepare/ buy my own lunch.
1pm - 5pm: After lunch, I have to feed him his milk and let him take his afternoon nap.. after which, I will try to take a short nap or surf the net before he wakes up. Then I will have to do the laundry and prepare/ cook dinner... it is hard to be carrying a baby to go buy food twice a day as the nearest kopitiam is 15min away so I will cook simple 1 or 2 dishes for dinner and keep any leftover for lunch the next day. Of course, I will have to start/ stop whatever I'm doing many times as he will want my attention when he is awake.
5pm - 9pm: Usually by this time of the day, he will get restless and my energy will get low... my patience is wearing thin because he will want me to keep carrying him as I try to eat, feed poppy.. it will then be time for me to clear the dishes, wash his milk bottles and go to bed early because he will want to be fed around 11pm and 3am..
Everyday is more or less the same.. unless I go out.. It's already quite tedious caring for one baby full time so I can only imagine those mums who have to take care of 2 or more babies by themselves without the maids. By weekends, I can't wait to get out of the house and hit the malls! A second baby? Guess I will have to think twice... ah, maybe thrice!
